The English translation of 'fleur-de-lis' (sometimes spelled 'fleur-de-lys') is 'flower of the lily.' This symbol has been described by some as depicting a stylized lily or lotus flower, but other historians attribute its origin to a species of wild iris, the Iris pseudacorus. Traditionally, it has been used to represent French royalty, and in that sense it is said to signify perfection, light, and life. Legend has it that an angel presented Clovis, the Merovingian king of the Franks, with a golden lily (or iris) as a symbol of his purification upon his conversion to Christianity. Others claim that Clovis adopted the symbol when waterlilies showed him how to safely cross a river and thus succeed in battle.
The History
In the twelfth century, either King Louis VI or King Louis VII (sources disagree) became the first French monarch to use the fleur-de-lis on his shield. English kings later used the symbol on their coats of arms to emphasize their claims to the throne of France. In the 14th century, the fleur-de-lis was often incorporated into the family insignia that was sewn on the knight's surcoat, which was worn over their coat of mail, thus the term, 'coat of arms.' The original purpose of identification in battle developed into a system of social status designations after 1483 when King Edmund IV established the Heralds' College to supervise the granting of armor insignia.
Religion and War
- Joan of Arc carried a white banner that showed God blessing the French royal emblem, the fleur-de-lis, when she led French troops to victory over the English in support of the Dauphin, Charles VII, in his quest for the French throne.
- The Roman Catholic Church ascribed the lily as the special emblem of the Virgin Mary.
- Due to its three 'petals,' the fleur-de-lis has also been used to represent the Holy Trinity.
- Military units, including divisions of the United States Army, have used the symbol's resemblance to a spearhead to identify martial power and strength.

What is Hatching?
'Hatching' is the term for representing the colors of a coat of arms in black and white. This was necessary when color printing was excessively expensive.
I’ve never heard of this brand Flor De Lis until a few months ago. And from the moment I saw it, it didn’t take long for me to pull the trigger.
Why?
Well to be honest, I bought it mostly for its beautiful eye-catching blue package.
But after drinking it every day for the past two weeks or so, I was very pleased with this brand.
If you’re wondering what Flor De Lis is all about, I’m about to show you how this mate smells, tastes, looks, and more so don’t miss another word.
Here we go…
As I carefully open this package as to not harm its lovely design, I’m welcomed with this bright aroma filled with grass and cereal. Delectable hints of strawberry jam are also weaved into its bouquet, while a light smokiness hides in the back.
Going into this mate, I had no clue what to expect. There are barely any reviews or people talking about this brand. All I know is it looks pretty from the outside and it’s dried using the traditional barbacua method.
But after having a few gourds of Flor De Lis, I can now say it contains this rich soil-likeearthiness coupled with lovely notes of toasted bread/oats and tobacco. A fresh grassy taste is also noticeable in the background. Very reminiscent of La Tranquera and Nobleza Gaucha. The barbacua method adds a nice smokiness behind the mate. Typically, this method leaves a cigarette/ashtray-like taste behind, but not with this one. Flor De Lis features hints of burning oak wood – slightly sweet yet slightly sour. Then as I get around the halfway point, I start tasting hints of black pepper.
Overall, Flor De Lis is very warm and inviting (especially during these colder months). Its flavor profile is also very complex. Each session, I taste something new. The above is what I get the most but sometimes notes of dried fruits and cream pop up too.
This mate does best in hotter temperatures of around 160ºF (71ºC).
After swallowing, Flor De Lis leaves a zesty citrus finish behind that I can feel on the edges of my tongue. But this quickly transforms into that same sweet woody flavor from before. The finish lasts for at least 30 seconds before clearing up.
Flor De Lis is a medium-to-full bodied mate. Strong, heavy, and robust. Once you take a sip, this mate’s creamy feel completely takes over. In the beginning, its texture can feel a bit sandy/grainy. But after several refills, the mate starts to become nice, smooth and silky.
Flor De Lis features a classic Argentine blend with a nice mix of fine and coarse-cut leaves which have a faded green hue to them. Palos are mostly white, large, and thick, but don’t take up much of the bag. As for dust, it’s kept at a moderate amount. Not too much, not too little.
And this makes preparation fairly easy. The mountain of mate stays well put while the larger particles help keep good filtration.
Surprisingly, Flor De Lis has a medium-to-long cycle. For an Argentinian brand, I usually expect a short session. But with this one, I can easily drink up to 3/4 of a liter. The flavor also stays strong for a majority of the time. Even when I expect it to lose its taste, it somehow always pulls through.
Flor De Lis provides an instant, but steady kick.

After just one gourd, I can already feel a warming sensation take over my body. As for stimulating effects, you can expect the usual of laserfocus and concentration. There’s nothing energizing about this mate, at least for me. Everything feels under control. Making it the perfect companion for productive work like studying, writing, and reading.

However, I wouldn’t recommend this during the evening or afternoon because of how long its effects last. Keep this as your trusty morning mate.
Flor De Lis is a fantastic mate. But I can’t recommend this to just anybody.
After drinking this brand for several weeks, it gives me the impression that not everyone will like it, especially beginners when it comes down to its smokiness.
But for more experienced drinkers, this shouldn’t be a problem.
In fact, its smokiness along with the rest of its rich earthy flavors should be exactly what you’re looking for. In addition to its complexity in flavor, I’m always surprised by what this mate has to show me next. It’s definitely going to be a brand I keep around at all times.
